The Portuguese Association of the Castle’s Friends, a non-profitable organization was founded in 1983, following a collective will to preserve Portuguese military monuments. In 2003 was established as a Non Governmental Organization which enhanced our ability to act in the defence and conservation of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage.
We have more than 2600 members trough out the country that participate, in a regular basis, in our activities that range from scientific study visits (in Portugal and abroad), seminars, conferences, educational projects, exhibitions, technical projects.
We celebrate Castle’s Day since 1984. In 2003 this day was officially fixed on the 7th of October, with celebrations all over the country.
Our official headquarters are located in Palácio Flor da Murta – Terrugem, Caxias (near Lisbon). Our honorary headquarters are at the São Bruno Fort, a XVIIth century fort in the shores of the river Tagus. Our administrative services are located in Lisbon, in the heart of the city, near Rossio.
We are the largest heritage civil organization in Portugal. Our aims are to help in the preservation, protection, promotion and revitalization of the Portuguese fortified monuments as well as their environmental and historical surroundings. Furthermore we wish to achieve a more complete knowledge of the matter, with the promotion of study, research and interest in our castles and fortresses, so that we can lay the path towards their valorisation and global fruition.
